Frequently Asked Questions

What should my first step be?

Contact me via e-mail to set up a brief phone consultation. I will get a sense of what you are hoping for out of the process and we can discuss logistics. You will also have an opportunity to ask preliminary questions about the process, my approach, etc.

What can I expect in a first session?

In an initial intake assessment, I will gather information about you, your presenting needs, and relevant history. It also serves as an opportunity to ensure that the therapeutic fit is right for you and that my skill-set matches your needs in the best way.

How long does treatment typically last?

Therapy is an investment in yourself that requires time and energy. Treatment is individualized and can be brief in nature, or more long-term depending on the scope of the work. I welcome ongoing discussions relating to treatment progress.

Is therapy only talking?

While the basis of my approach is talk therapy, there will be emphasis placed on structured skill-building. This may look like in-session exercises with the goal of implementing skills outside of sessions. I will always assess client needs at the beginning of treatment in order to engage in collaborative treatment planning.

Is therapy "worth it?"

As noted, therapy is an investment in yourself. We often find ourselves being pulled in many directions with little time to connect with our own internal process. Therapy provides safe, supportive structure in order to look closely at emotional wounds and unwanted patterns. Therapy empowers you to live the life you envision for yourself.

Is information I share in session confidential?

Yes. Therapy is designed to offer a safe, non-biased, confidential space. There can be  limits to this confidentiality which I go over in the first session and is documented in my intake paperwork.

How will I know if therapy is having the desired impact?

Despite being an individualized process, there can be universal signs of change. Clients often report noticing positive shifts in their mood/functioning, the use of learned skills outside of session and overall increased awareness of patterns and responses.

Will you tell me all of the things I need to change?

While this may sound ideal to some, my role is to facilitate and support you in the process of discovering your own agency for change. I will be direct at times with my approach, yet I will allow you the space to realize and connect with your strength and resiliency.
